Mountain Ash (also known as Rowan) adds colour to woodland throughout Ireland, especially in the hills where it will grow at a high altitude even on rocky ground.
The creamy flowers ripen into scarlet berries which colour early in the season and provide food for thrushes through the winter.
A mistle thrush will defend a rowan tree or holly as its territory, not for nesting, but through the winter as its feeding territory.
Rowan is an attractive garden tree: it likes well drained sites but will thrive in most soils.
It makes wonderful walking sticks. It has a nice bark somewhat similar to Hazel and responds nicely to all good wood finishes.

Advantages of Mountain Ash for stickmaking:
  1. Very light so even large sticks are never heavy
  2. Attractive under-bark which takes a lovely finish
  3. Full of individuality and character
I source all my sticks locally in an environmentally friendly way. I season the sticks for a minimum of two years and finish each one by hand. The dimensions shown under the Additional Information tab are in inches and ounces. The width is the measurement at the tip (bottom) of the stick. Any stick can be shortened to a specified length at no extra cost. Guidelines for arriving at the optimum length for you are shown on the Choosing a Stick page. Handmade walking sticks from Ireland. Native woods and natural finishes. “Designed by nature; Finished by hand”
