My sticks are entirely handmade and have been sourced, seasoned and handcrafted by me.
My Blackthorn sticks are different to the painted ‘shillelagh’ type that one sometimes sees in gift and craft shops. Instead the finish on my Blackthorn sticks highlights the natural colour of the carefully sanded bark.
Like all of my sticks they are as close to what nature produced as possible… including the occasional twist, bend and other imperfection. All of these characteristics makes them all the more distinctive and unashamedly Irish.
As my sticks are handmade, each one is a unique piece... no two are exactly similar.
Blackthorn (prunus spinosa), is a species of flowering plant in the rose family Rosaceae. The species is native to Europe, western Asia, and regionally in northwest Africa. It is locally naturalized in New Zealand, Tasmania, and the Pacific Northwest and New England regions of the United States. Fruits from Blackthorn, known as sloes, are used to make sloe gin in Britain and parts of the Basque Country.
Blackthorn is prone to splitting – this is a characteristic of the wood so hairline cracks are common. All of my Blackthorn sticks have been seasoned for a minimum of four years so any cracks will have ceased before they are offered for sale.
Some reasons for buying a Blackthorn walking stick:
- It is an extremely dense tough wood – will withstand lots of use
- The knots and beautiful hue of the sanded bark are remarkable.
- Blackthorn is regarded as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of wood species for walking sticks
The dimensions shown are in inches and ounces. The width is the measurement at the tip (bottom) of the stick.
Any stick can be shortened to a specified length at no extra cost.
Guidelines for arriving at the optimum length for you are shown on the Choosing a Stick page.
